According to a document circulating in the member countries of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Russia has begun to take steps to fight at the WTO against the US's imposition of tariffs on aluminum and steel products.
In the above document, Moscow accused Washington of violating many rules governing international trade and formally requested "consultations" with the US on tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum.
The consultation is the first step in the process of waging a full legal battle at the WTO. This move also means that Russia has joined other "heavy" members of the WTO - including the European Union (EU), China, India, Mexico and Canada - in the struggle to "resist" the WTO. US President Donald Trump's controversial trade policy.
Under WTO rules, if 60 days have passed and the consultation process fails to resolve the dispute, Russia can request the WTO to establish a panel to resolve the dispute. This can lead to an expensive and lengthy legal battle that will almost certainly take years to resolve.
Earlier in May, Moscow warned that it would impose retaliatory tariffs on products imported from the US totaling $540 million - equivalent to the damage that US trade moves could cause. for the domestic industry of the country.
